Workstation Firmware and POST: Incorrect storage controller mode | Auckland
Pattern to record: The operating system becomes inaccessible immediately after a setting change.
Record the boot configuration
Workstations may have multiple memory channels, add-in storage controllers and protected array settings. Record the installed layout and diagnostic code; preserve RAID configuration when reducing the machine to a supported test configuration. One possible explanation is that AHCI, RAID or vendor storage settings no longer match the installed driver.
Preserve recovery options
Do not initialise storage controllers or clear security data during basic POST diagnosis. Switching modes repeatedly can confuse diagnosis but does not repair a failing drive.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Use diagnostic codes and minimum supported configuration while preserving RAID and security settings.
- Record the original controller mode and confirm drive visibility before Windows repair.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the matching mode or prepare the correct driver transition safely. Verification should cover cold boot, all memory channels, storage controller state, expansion devices and sustained work.
