Desktop SATA Data Path: Does another storage device disable this connection?
Pattern to record: The connection fails only after another storage device or expansion card is installed.
Identify the connection
Desktop SATA uses a motherboard data port plus a separate drive power connection. Keep the drive identity and port order recorded, especially in a RAID setup, when comparing a cable or port. Shared ports are defined by the host motherboard or controller; a USB bridge or SATA cable does not independently allocate motherboard PCIe lanes.
Protect the drive
Power down before moving internal SATA cables. A new cable cannot override a documented host port-sharing restriction.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare a known cable and port and review interface error counters.
- Consult the exact host’s lane and port-sharing table and compare the configuration before and after that change.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, move devices only to documented supported ports or correct the host setting that disables the connection. Verification should cover cold boot, sustained transfer, restart, sleep and error counters.
For an assessment of your desktop computer, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
