Desktop SATA Data Path: SATA interface mode mismatch | Auckland
Pattern to record: Firmware sees the device but the installed system will not boot after a settings change.
Identify the connection
Desktop SATA uses a motherboard data port plus a separate drive power connection. Keep the drive identity and port order recorded, especially in a RAID setup, when comparing a cable or port. One possible explanation is that the controller setting does not match the operating-system driver or drive type.
Protect the drive
Power down before moving internal SATA cables. Reinitialising the disk is unnecessary and risks data.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare a known cable and port and review interface error counters.
- Record original mode and compare driver requirements without modifying the volume.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the compatible mode or prepare a safe driver transition. Verification should cover cold boot, sustained transfer, restart, sleep and error counters.
For an assessment of your desktop computer, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
