Review Selected Email Text Before Thunderbird Sends It to Web Search

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A customer email may contain a public error message surrounded by a name, order reference and other private details. Thunderbird's web-search action uses the selected text as a query. Decide which words may leave the message before opening that action.

For example, a report might quote “paper size mismatch” and then describe a customer's job. The error phrase can be useful for finding a vendor explanation; the customer's identifying details normally add nothing to that search.

Inspect the selection and the named destination

Highlight only the public phrase in the message. Right-click and inspect the Search entry, including the provider and quoted selection. Mozilla documents that this action opens results in the default browser. It is different from searching for mail already in your Thunderbird folders.

If the menu shows more text than intended, cancel and select again. Watch for a whole line captured by a broad mouse gesture, especially where an identifier sits directly beside the error. Do not use a real customer's message as the first experiment.

Thunderbird's Settings, General contains the Default Search Engine choice. Check the provider actually displayed on your installation rather than relying on an old screenshot or assuming that the browser's own default controls this menu.

Rehearse with a harmless phrase

Use non-sensitive sample text and invoke the inspected search action. In the resulting browser page, compare the query and destination with what the menu showed. A browser opening successfully is not sufficient if the submitted phrase includes unwanted surrounding text.

Return to the email before deciding what to do with the results. Confirm the product and context behind a suggested explanation; a matching phrase may belong to several unrelated programs. Prefer the relevant vendor's own troubleshooting page when available.

If the needed query is inherently private, use an approved internal knowledge source or seek help through the appropriate confidential channel. Do not try the public search first and plan to remove the identifying words afterwards.

Record only the useful public error phrase and source link in a general troubleshooting note. Keep the original correspondence in its proper mailbox. The completed check establishes which text and destination were used; it does not certify the accuracy of every page returned by the search.
