Set Up Remote Desktop to Your Windows Pro PC on a Trusted Local Network

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

Remote Desktop can let a second Windows computer use the applications and files on your own desktop PC. This guide is for two computers on a trusted local network, with permission to configure the destination machine.

Decide whether persistent remote access is needed before enabling it. The destination computer is the host; the computer you sit at is the client. Keep those roles clear when recording names and troubleshooting a connection.

Check the host and account

On the host, open Settings, System, About and check the Windows edition. This procedure uses Windows 11 Pro. Windows Home can be a client but cannot host incoming Remote Desktop sessions.

The host must be powered on, reachable on the network and configured to allow the connection through its firewall. Setting up access requires administrator authority. Use a permitted account with a strong, unique password, and keep Network Level Authentication enabled.

Enabling Remote Desktop makes the host accessible to devices on its local network. Avoid doing this on an untrusted network or a computer whose access policy forbids it.

Enable and test a local connection

On the host, open Settings, System, Remote Desktop. Turn the feature on, confirm the prompt and record the PC name. Review Remote Desktop users if a specific additional account needs permission; grant access only to the intended user.

On the client, search for Remote Desktop Connection. Enter the recorded host name, choose Connect and sign in with the authorised account. Do not proceed past an unexpected computer identity without checking it.

Use a harmless document to confirm that you reached the intended desktop and can complete the planned task. Record which client, account and local network worked. If connection fails, inspect those prerequisites before changing security settings.

This local test does not establish access from outside the home. Keep router forwarding outside this setup. When remote access is no longer needed, turn Remote Desktop off on the host and verify that a new connection no longer succeeds.
