Desktop SATA Data Path: Worn storage connector contact | Auckland
Pattern to record: Detection changes after gentle reseating or movement.
Identify the connection
Desktop SATA uses a motherboard data port plus a separate drive power connection. Keep the drive identity and port order recorded, especially in a RAID setup, when comparing a cable or port. One possible explanation is that repeated insertion or movement has reduced reliable electrical contact.
Protect the drive
Power down before moving internal SATA cables. Repeated live reseating can corrupt data or short power.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare a known cable and port and review interface error counters.
- Inspect mating surfaces and compare a known supported device.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, replace the worn socket, cable or interposer. Verification should cover cold boot, sustained transfer, restart, sleep and error counters.
For an assessment of your desktop computer, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
