Allow One Known Windows App Through the Firewall and Review the Exception

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A legitimate network application may need an exception in Windows Firewall. Start by confirming which program needs to communicate and why. An unfamiliar permission request is a reason to identify the software, rather than approve it to make the message disappear.

Write down the failing operation, such as an authorised application receiving a connection from another device. Keep the app version, executable location and exact error available. If this is a work computer, use the administrator’s approved configuration.

Make the exception specific

Microsoft generally recommends allowing an app rather than opening a port manually: an allowed app uses the needed ports when required, whereas a separately opened port remains open until closed. Both choices expand access and should have a clear purpose.

Open Windows Security, Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall. Select Change settings and provide authorised administrator approval if requested. Enable the known app’s entry, or use Allow another app and select its verified executable path.

Review the network scope shown before confirming. Do not grant additional network access simply because several boxes are available. Keep a record of the original entry and the scope you changed so the exception can be reversed precisely.

Test the operation that required access

Retry the same operation from the intended device on the intended network. Record whether it succeeds and whether the original error changed. A working website in the browser is not a substitute for testing the particular application’s connection.

If the change does not help, restore the previous permission and investigate the application’s instructions, address and network path. Turning off the whole firewall would change far more than this test established.

When the application is retired or the access is no longer needed, return to the allowed-app list, clear its checkbox and select OK. The finished task includes removing an obsolete exception, not merely getting past the first connection failure.
