Distinguish Headset Sidetone From an Echo Heard by Other People

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

Hearing yourself inside a headset is not automatically the same problem as another person hearing an echo. Some headsets deliberately feed a little microphone sound back to your ears so you can judge your speaking level.

Identify who hears the repeated sound

First note whether the sound is immediate and local to your headset or a delayed repetition during a call. Ask a willing test participant what they hear, or use the meeting application's supported microphone test. Do not change every audio setting before establishing this distinction.

Logitech calls its local self-monitoring feature sidetone. The Zone Vibe Wireless guide explains that its level can be adjusted in Logi Tune to control how loudly you hear your own voice. That control is specific to the headset's monitoring experience; it should not be treated as a universal microphone-volume control.

Record the current level, then make a small supported adjustment while speaking normally. Keep the microphone position and speaker volume unchanged so you can tell what the sidetone change actually affects.

Verify the transmitted voice separately

Make a short recording or an authorised test call and check the voice that is sent. Confirm that it is clear and neither excessively quiet nor distorted. A comfortable self-monitor level does not prove that the app selected the correct microphone.

If other people still hear a delayed echo, investigate the actual call route separately. Note whether another device in the room has joined with speakers active, and use the meeting app's documented audio checks. Do not assume turning down sidetone solves sound travelling through another participant's microphone.

Keep the setting that helps you speak at a normal level without distracting you. Recheck it when changing headset fit, microphone position or calling software, and avoid raising overall listening volume merely to compensate for an uncomfortable monitor balance.

The acceptance test has two parts: you can speak comfortably, and the recording or listener confirms clear transmitted audio. Treating those as separate observations prevents a local monitoring preference from hiding a real call-audio issue.
