Read a Translated Web Page While Keeping the Original Wording Available

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A translated supplier page can help you understand a procedure, but product identifiers, units and unusual terms still need checking. Begin with the page’s own language selector, if it has one. A supplier-maintained translation may offer context that an automatic translation does not.

Keep a route back to the source

Record the page address and the original heading before translating. For a short unclear passage, highlight the text, right-click it and choose Chrome’s translation command for the selection. This limits the amount of surrounding material you need to compare.

For a whole page, use Chrome’s Translate control and choose the desired language. If the control is unavailable, Google also documents right-clicking the page to request translation. Keep an original-language view available so that you can compare the particular instruction that matters.

Check model numbers, quantities, dates and units against the original. A smooth sentence is not proof that a specialist term has the correct meaning. If the instruction could cause an irreversible change, ask the supplier to clarify the ambiguous phrase before carrying it out.

Make future behaviour intentional

Chrome’s Languages settings separate the preferred translation language from lists of languages translated automatically or never offered for translation. Review those lists if a page keeps changing language unexpectedly. You do not need to change the browser’s entire interface language to translate one document.

Use a harmless support page to test the chosen preference. Confirm the translation appears in the intended language, then return to the original wording and locate the same heading. This checks that you can move between assistance and evidence when a term is uncertain.

When requesting help, include the original phrase and its page location alongside your question. Label any automatic translation as such. That allows the supplier or technician to resolve the meaning instead of troubleshooting a paraphrase that no longer matches the source.
