BitLocker-Encrypted Windows Volume: Permission metadata fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: Files are present but access is denied after migration or restore.
Identify the storage layer
BitLocker is an encryption layer, not a file system. The NTFS-specific checks here apply only after the authorised volume is unlocked and its underlying format is confirmed; retain the recovery key before firmware or hardware changes. One possible explanation is that ownership or access-control records no longer match intended users.
Protect data before repair
Never clear TPM or format the volume while recovery information is uncertain. Blanket permission changes can expose private files or break applications.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Confirm ownership and recovery credentials before testing metadata or hardware changes.
- Confirm encryption, ownership and account identity before changing permissions.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair authorised ownership and ACL records without opening unrelated data. Verification should cover authorised unlock, restart, file access, backup and recovery-key documentation.
