BitLocker-Encrypted Windows Volume: Damaged volume header | Auckland
Pattern to record: The partition exists but its file system is reported as unknown.
Identify the storage layer
BitLocker is an encryption layer, not a file system. The NTFS-specific checks here apply only after the authorised volume is unlocked and its underlying format is confirmed; retain the recovery key before firmware or hardware changes. One possible explanation is that the primary structure describing the volume cannot be read correctly.
Protect data before repair
Never clear TPM or format the volume while recovery information is uncertain. Formatting writes new headers over evidence needed for recovery.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Confirm ownership and recovery credentials before testing metadata or hardware changes.
- Inspect primary and backup headers without creating a new file system.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, restore a valid backup header or recover data using the correct geometry. Verification should cover authorised unlock, restart, file access, backup and recovery-key documentation.
