Windows Laptop UEFI Firmware: Incorrect storage controller mode | Auckland
Pattern to record: The operating system becomes inaccessible immediately after a setting change.
Record the boot configuration
Record the laptop model, current firmware settings and whether the SSD is detected before changing boot options. Preserve any BitLocker recovery information so a firmware change does not turn a startup fault into a data-access problem. One possible explanation is that AHCI, RAID or vendor storage settings no longer match the installed driver.
Preserve recovery options
Keep stable power and do not interrupt a firmware write. Switching modes repeatedly can confuse diagnosis but does not repair a failing drive.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Record current settings, check hardware detection and compare a known recovery path before updating firmware.
- Record the original controller mode and confirm drive visibility before Windows repair.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, restore the matching mode or prepare the correct driver transition safely. Verification should cover cold boot, restart, storage detection, security state, sleep and Windows loading.
