Use an iPad as a Mac Display: Check Sidecar Before Your Trip
Sidecar can turn a compatible iPad into an additional display for Mac windows. It is useful for a portable reference screen, but you should test the exact devices and connection before depending on it away from your desk.
Check eligibility and the intended behaviour
Use Apple's current Sidecar compatibility list for both devices. Sidecar starts with macOS Catalina 10.15 and iPadOS 13, but the operating-system version alone is not sufficient: supported Mac and iPad models are also required.
Apple requires both devices to use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Wireless use also depends on proximity and enabled Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff. A USB connection requires the iPad to trust the Mac.
Decide whether you want Mac windows on the iPad or the iPad's own applications controlled with your Mac input devices. Sidecar serves the first purpose; Apple identifies Universal Control as the separate feature for the second.
Rehearse a complete session
Connect at home using the arrangement you expect to travel with. A direct USB connection can keep the iPad charged during use. In macOS Ventura 13 and later, Sidecar options are available through Displays settings after selecting the iPad; older releases use different settings layouts.
Try one realistic task, such as placing a reference PDF on the iPad while editing a document on the Mac. Confirm whether the display is extended or mirrored and move a window back again. Test with your usual keyboard and pointing device rather than assuming all touch interactions work identically across software versions.
Practise ending the session and returning all essential work to the Mac's own display. Pack the cable you actually tested, and keep important reference material available locally if the trip includes unreliable internet.
If the iPad is absent from the choices, recheck eligibility and account requirements before purchasing another adapter. A new cable cannot resolve an unsupported device combination.
