macOS APFS Container: Metadata stored on failing media | Auckland
Pattern to record: Repair scans stall or new errors appear at the same disk locations.
Identify the storage layer
APFS separates the physical device, container and individual volumes. Record which layer fails to appear or mount, and protect required files before changing container metadata or removing snapshots. One possible explanation is that critical file-system records occupy unreadable or unstable storage blocks.
Protect data before repair
A reinstall or erase is not a data-recovery first step. Repair scans on failing media can increase damage and reduce recovery.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Protect the physical drive and inspect container, volume and snapshot structure before repair.
- Clone readable sectors first and review physical health before logical repair.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, recover data from the clone and replace the failing storage device. Verification should cover mounting, startup, snapshots, file access, sleep and verified backup.
