Moving from a phone to a Mac can mean continuing the same application task or bringing across a small piece of content. Decide which outcome you need before trying several sharing controls and creating unnecessary copies.

Handoff continues a supported foreground task. Universal Clipboard transfers something you copied. Neither should be treated as a permanent record of unfinished work, so save valuable documents using the application’s normal controls.

Continue a supported task

For Handoff, Apple requires nearby devices signed in to the same Apple Account, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff enabled. Check the linked compatibility requirements for older hardware. The application must support Handoff and be installed on the receiving device.

Keep the source device unlocked with the task open in front. On the Mac, use the application’s Handoff icon in the Dock or App Switcher. The small device symbol identifies it as a continuation from another device.

Try an ordinary web page first. Confirm that the Mac opens the intended page or task before relying on the feature for a longer document. An application opening successfully does not establish that every specialised editor state was transferred.

Transfer a selected piece of content

Universal Clipboard also requires nearby compatible devices using the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff. Copy the item on one device and paste normally on the other. Apple says the copied content is available briefly and is replaced when something else is copied on either device.

Use a harmless phrase for the first test. Select a disposable text field on the Mac, paste once and verify the exact words. If the wrong content appears, check the most recent copy action on both devices before repeating the paste into important work.

For a real task, inspect the destination field before pasting private material. Copying is separate from choosing where the content will be inserted, and a nearby device may have changed the clipboard since your first action.

Choose the route that preserves the intended context with the fewest unnecessary copies. When the task needs a retained file rather than a momentary continuation or paste, save and verify that file through an appropriate document workflow.
