Laptop NVMe Socket and PCIe Path: Interface thermal instability | Auckland
Pattern to record: Speed collapses or the device disconnects after a repeatable data load.
Identify the connection
This guide concerns an M.2 NVMe connection using PCIe. Record the supported drive length and protocol, and protect data before comparing drives; an M.2-shaped SATA drive is not automatically compatible. One possible explanation is that the drive, bridge or nearby controller overheats during sustained transfer.
Protect the drive
Isolate the battery before inserting or removing an M.2 drive. Continuous benchmarks can worsen an unstable drive.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare firmware detection, another supported drive and socket power with data protected.
- Log temperature and transfer state while verifying heatsink contact and airflow.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, restore correct cooling or replace the heat-sensitive interface component. Verification should cover cold boot, large reads, controlled writes, sleep, restart and health reporting.
