Make a Constant-Frame-Rate HandBrake Copy for an Editing Requirement

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

An editor may request constant-frame-rate media even though a phone recording plays acceptably in a normal player. Prepare an editing copy from the retained original, and confirm that this requirement actually applies before converting a whole folder.

This procedure uses HandBrake 1.10. Note the requested frame rate and the reason for the conversion, such as a stated import requirement or a repeatable timing problem. Keep a short description of what goes wrong in the editor; a conversion that finishes successfully has not yet proved that it solves the problem.

Choose the timing behaviour deliberately

In the Video tab, Same as Source with Variable Framerate preserves the source's timing without a frame-rate conversion. Peak Framerate sets an upper bound while allowing lower rates, so it does not establish one rate throughout the file.

For a specified editing requirement, select the requested numerical frame rate and Constant Framerate. HandBrake also offers Constant Framerate with Same as Source, which detects a rate and conforms variable sections; an explicit rate avoids leaving that target implicit when the recipient has supplied one.

Changing the timing does not create new captured moments that were absent from the recording. Keep expectations tied to editor compatibility rather than treating the highest available number as an automatic motion-quality improvement.

Use two timing witnesses far apart

Before encoding, identify a clear event near the beginning and another near the end, preferably with a visible action and a recognisable sound. A tool being set down or a hand clap can be more useful than continuously moving lips.

Encode to a new filename. Import the result into a small project using the intended editor and inspect both witnesses. Confirm that picture and sound remain aligned at each point and compare the reported duration with the original. A good opening does not establish that the end remains aligned.

Also repeat the operation that originally failed, such as moving the playhead to a specific moment or playing across a problematic cut. Record whether that behaviour changed. If it did not, preserve the test and investigate the remaining cause instead of describing CFR conversion as a guaranteed repair.

Keep the original recording until the actual editing workflow accepts the copy. Identify the converted file and chosen rate in the handover so a later relink does not accidentally restore the unconverted source.
