Gaming Laptop High-Power DC Input: Cracked input solder joint | Auckland
Pattern to record: The socket itself looks intact but movement changes voltage at the board.
Identify the input design
A gaming laptop may run normally at the desktop yet exceed the available adapter power during a combined CPU and GPU workload. Record the original adapter model and whether the failure occurs while gaming, charging, or both. One possible explanation is that mechanical load has separated a connector leg or pad from the board.
Stop before further damage
Do not continue a graphics load when the plug, jack or cable is overheating. Adding solder without repairing a lifted pad can hide an unreliable connection.
Workshop checks
- Use the correct wattage adapter, monitor input stability under a controlled load and inspect the jack and cable for heat damage.
- Support the board, inspect all anchor and electrical joints and test continuity without flexing excessively.
Repair and power verification
If the checks support this cause, rebuild or replace the damaged joint and restore mechanical support. Verification should cover idle charging, combined processor and graphics load, connector temperature and restart.
For an assessment of your gaming laptop, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
