Reframe a Freeform Scene for Another Device Without Moving the Board’s Objects

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A scene that comfortably frames a board on one device can look awkward on another. The immediate problem may be the saved view rather than the positions of the board’s objects. Before dragging content closer together, decide whether you need a better frame for the same arrangement.

Choose one scene and identify its required content. For a simple check, use three recognisable labels near the left, right and lower edges, plus the central explanation. Record their relationships so a view adjustment is not confused with an accidental object move.

Replace the view deliberately

Apple describes scenes as saved views of a Freeform board and notes that a scene captured on an iPad in portrait orientation may frame differently on a Mac. Zoom and scroll to the desired view, then open Scene Navigator and Show Scenes. In the scene’s options, Replace Scene saves the current view over the previous one.

If Replace Scene is unavailable, change the visible frame first. Use zoom and navigation to include the required content, keeping the objects in their intended arrangement.

Return to another scene and then revisit the revised one. Inspect all three edge labels and the central explanation. A comfortable centre does not establish that a caption at the bottom or an arrow at the side survived the new crop.

Check the output context separately

For printing, Apple notes that scenes default to the current device’s size; Capturing Device in Freeform’s print options uses the original framing. Choose deliberately when reproducing someone else’s scene. Also review any exported scene PDF rather than assuming its page shows precisely the region you had in mind.

For a presentation, rehearse on the actual device and window arrangement that will be used. Move through the scene sequence and inspect transitions, not only the scene edited most recently. If the purpose is to emphasise a subset, make that intention clear so omitted surrounding content is not mistaken for a missing board object.

All collaborators can access saved scenes in the board, according to Apple. A narrower scene is therefore a presentation choice, not a privacy boundary for the rest of the shared board. Keep the board’s content appropriate for its collaborators and use the reframed scene to improve explanation without making an unsupported access-control claim.
