Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: Interface thermal instability | Auckland
Pattern to record: Speed collapses or the device disconnects after a repeatable data load.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that the drive, bridge or nearby controller overheats during sustained transfer.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Continuous benchmarks can worsen an unstable drive.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Log temperature and transfer state while verifying heatsink contact and airflow.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, restore correct cooling or replace the heat-sensitive interface component. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
