Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: Missing storage power rail | Auckland
Pattern to record: The device is not detected and shows no normal activity despite valid data configuration.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that the interface does not provide a required supply voltage.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Injecting voltage without knowing the rail can destroy the drive.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Measure the relevant rail with the exact drive and board specification.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, repair the power switch, fuse, cable or regulator responsible. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
