Use Chrome Captions for a Training Video Without Confusing Them With Translation

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

Captions can make a browser training video easier to follow, particularly when the presenter speaks quickly or the room is noisy. Choose a short section you understand well for the first test. That gives you a way to check the generated text before relying on it for unfamiliar instructions.

Match the caption language to the audio

Open Chrome Settings and find Accessibility and its caption controls; the layout varies by platform and version. Enable Live Caption and add the supported language needed for the recording. Chrome downloads the relevant language pack. Select the language that matches the speech, rather than the language you would like a translation to use.

Play the test section with its audio enabled. Move or expand the caption bubble so it does not cover buttons or an important demonstration. Adjust caption appearance where needed, then check whether names, product codes and numbers agree with the recording or accompanying written material.

If text does not appear, check the selected language, the media’s playback state and whether the speech is actually coming from Chrome. A caption setting cannot establish that a separate desktop application’s audio is supported by this browser feature.

Make translation a separate decision

Google states that Live Caption audio and captions are processed locally and are not stored or sent from the device. Live Translate is different: captions are sent to Google for translation. Review that choice before using confidential training or customer material.

When translation is appropriate, set both the supported source language and the desired output language. Replay the same short section and compare its meaning with an authoritative written version where one exists. Generated wording is useful assistance, but an uncertain instruction or number should be confirmed before acting on it.

Record the chosen language and whether translation is enabled. The result to verify is readable, useful captioning for the actual video, with the intended data-processing choice—not simply an enabled switch in Settings.
