Check Windows on Arm Support Before Installing an App That Uses Drivers

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

An application opening successfully does not prove that every component it depends on works on a Windows on Arm computer. Software that installs hardware, printing, security or other system drivers needs a more specific compatibility check.

First identify the computer. Open Settings, System, About and inspect System type under Device specifications. Microsoft says an Arm device is identified there as having an ARM-based processor. Record the Windows version and exact application version alongside that result.

Separate the app from its driver-dependent feature

Microsoft explains that many Windows 11 applications can run through emulation when they are not built natively for Arm. Drivers have a different requirement: they must be designed for Windows on Arm, either included in Windows or supplied as suitable Arm64 drivers by the developer.

Write down the actual feature you need. For example, opening a document is different from using an application’s installed virtual printer, and viewing a device’s status window is different from communicating with the device through its driver.

Check the publisher’s official compatibility guidance for that feature and version. A general Windows 11 label or an application-store listing does not answer a separate driver question. Ask the supplier when its requirements do not distinguish the components clearly.

Test the complete supported workflow

Use a harmless sample only after establishing a supported installation route. Exercise the required function from beginning to end, including the relevant peripheral, export or protected connection. Keep the original files and known working arrangement available while evaluating the new setup.

If the main window works but the required feature fails, record that distinction. Do not repeatedly install an x64 driver, disable protection or try an unofficial driver package to force compatibility.

Retain the supplier’s supported-version information with the test result. Compatibility can depend on more than the processor label, and a future application update deserves its own check when it changes the component you rely on.

The useful outcome is a verified feature path, rather than a broad claim that all Windows software works or fails on Arm.
