A Camera Works in an App but Not a Chrome Meeting: Check the Permission Layers

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

A working camera in another application is useful evidence, but it does not grant a meeting website access through Chrome. Check the layers between the device and the meeting before buying another webcam or resetting the whole computer.

Start with the intended meeting site

Confirm the website address and open its pre-meeting preview. In Chrome Settings, go to Privacy and security, Site settings, then Camera. Review whether that site is blocked or allowed and check the selected camera. Repeat under Microphone when audio is affected; camera permission does not automatically grant microphone access.

If Chrome requests access through the computer’s settings, follow that operating-system prompt for Chrome. A permission at one layer does not replace the other. On a managed work device, unavailable controls may be set by an administrator; record the message instead of trying to remove management.

Use a private test before the real call

Close another application that may be using the camera, then reload or rejoin the meeting preview. Select the intended camera and microphone in the meeting’s own controls where available. Confirm the preview shows the right scene and the input meter responds to your voice without exposing private material in the background.

For a microphone failure, inspect the headset’s physical mute switch as well as the website’s mute control. Write down which combination works: the device, application and website matter more than a general statement that video is broken.

After a one-off meeting, review whether the site still needs continuing permission. If the same device fails in several unrelated applications, include that broader result when seeking hardware or operating-system help.
