Reset Selected Form Fields to Defaults While Keeping a Reference ID

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

The word Reset needs a precise meaning on a reusable form. Before adding the button, ask which answers should return to a starting value and which identifier must survive. Write these expectations beside the relevant questions rather than relying on the button's caption.

Use a fictional Acrobat desktop form with Quantity defaulting to 1, Note without a default, and a separate ReferenceID. Retain the template before experimenting. The exercise requires no submission destination or real customer information.

Specify the reset set

In Prepare a form, add a Button and open its properties. Under Actions, choose Mouse Up and Reset a form, then Add. Select Quantity and Note in the field list, leave ReferenceID unselected, confirm and close the properties.

The PDF specification defines reset as restoring each selected field's default value. Without a default, the current value is removed. Fields outside this reset set retain their values. Reset therefore does not mean every box becomes blank.

Change Quantity to 4, enter a note and set ReferenceID to TEST-42. Activate the button. Expect Quantity 1, an empty Note and ReferenceID still TEST-42. Check each outcome separately, including the reference that should remain unchanged.

Give the button a testable purpose

Name the button for the intended task, such as Reset entry details, if that better communicates its scope. Ask another reviewer to predict the three outcomes from the form's wording before they try it. A technically correct action can still surprise someone when its caption implies a broader operation.

Record the selected field names and the observed three-part result with the template revision. Keep a failed example if one outcome differs; that is more useful than repeatedly pressing the button and losing track of the original entries.

Accept this feature only after the default, empty and retained cases all satisfy the written requirement. Review any later field additions against that same requirement rather than assuming the old reset list remains sufficient.
