Choose Permitted Changes Before Certifying a PDF

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

Before certifying a PDF, define the work that should happen afterward. A recipient who needs to complete a field has a different task from someone who should only read the document. Write that requirement down while the unsigned source is still available.

Use a fictional practice document and an already authorised test digital ID in Acrobat desktop. If the appropriate ID is unavailable, stop before signing. This exercise does not require creating credentials or changing certificate trust settings.

Choose the policy before saving

Certification requires a digital ID and no existing signatures. In All tools > Use a certificate, choose visible or invisible certification, follow any placement prompt and select the intended ID.

Verify the identity details and choose an appropriate Permitted Actions After Certifying option. Inspect warnings through Review before signing. Save separately from the unsigned original.

Adobe advises removing potentially unsafe scripts, actions and embedded media before certification. Resolve warnings before accepting the exercise.

Test the requirement you wrote down

Keep the policy wording in the review notes. On separate copies of the certified practice result, attempt one intended follow-up task and one task outside the selected category. Record what Acrobat allows and what its signature panel reports after each attempt.

Do not reduce that record to a screenshot of the visible signature mark. Include the chosen policy, the exact attempted change and the observed status so another reviewer can understand the test conditions.

Treat unexpected results as a reason to revisit the document and requirement before using an operational file. This workflow checks Acrobat's modification policy. Establishing a signer's trust, the truth of the document's contents or its legal effect requires separate consideration.
